The influential Romanian school of geomorphology aimed, since its early symposia (Brașov, 1972; Piatra Neamț, 1980), to establish a professional association in this field. It was only on April 6, 1990, that the Romanian Association of Geomorphologists was founded during a meeting of the founding members (university professors, researchers, geography teachers, and specialists from other fields interested in relief studies) held at the Faculty of Geography in Bucharest. On that occasion, the first leadership was elected, with Professor Grigore Posea serving as the first president (vice-presidents: Ion Mac, Dan Bălteanu, Ioniță Ichim). In the same year, the association acquired legal personality (founding documents were published in the Journal of Geomorphology, no. 1, 1997). It can be noted that the establishment of AGR took place less than a year after the founding of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG/AIG) in 1989, on the occasion of the Second International Conference on Geomorphology (Frankfurt/Main, Germany).
The Romanian Association of Geomorphologists joined IAG/AIG in 1997, alongside 61 other professional geomorphology associations from as many countries.
With annual, occasionally biennial regularity, Romanian geomorphologists (both affiliated and non-affiliated with AGR) have gathered for symposia to discuss key issues regarding the relief of Romania, research concepts and methodologies, as well as challenges from other related fields impacting landforms. The list of symposia and the AGR leadership throughout the years is indicative of the tradition of these gatherings and the consolidation of the core community of geomorphology specialists.
